Player Roles

All-in-one metrics, like our own Crafted Plus Minus, are by nature descriptive stats, i.e., they tell you what has happened as opposed to what will happen. Here, we attempt to enhance these metrics by adding some context to them by grouping players via their offensive and defensive roles.

Offensive Roles are determined through cluster analysis of NBA playtype data, identifying natural groupings in how players are used within their team's offense. We analyze each player's frequency in different play types (pick-and-roll, spot-up, post-up, etc.) to identify distinct offensive roles. For example, Movement Ball Handlers are characterized by their mix of on-ball creation and off-ball movement, while Spot Up Shooters primarily space the floor and take catch-and-shoot opportunities.

Defensive Roles are identified using a similar cluster analysis approach, but focused on defensive metrics. We analyze key defensive statistics and matchup data, including metrics like Crafted DPM, Deflections, Steal Rate, Block Rate, Rebound Rate, Versatility, Matchup Difficulty, and positional guarding percentages, to group players based on their defensive contributions and assignments. This helps distinguish roles like Rim Protectors, On-Ball Guards, Disruptors, and Versatile Stoppers.
